Current times are sort of bittersweet for the class of 2020. With students heading towards graduation, these are the days they have never imagined; there are no processions, no handing out of diplomas & degrees, no speeches, no parties, and no dance.
Graduation is commencing at a time of great uncertainty. However, it should also be understood that graduation is itself a tremendous achievement, and such a moment is worth celebrating regardless of circumstance. That is the reason Facebook planned a special event on its app and on Instagram as well.
On May 15, 2020, at 11 AM Pacific Time and 2 PM Eastern Time, Facebook broadcasted #Graduation2020: Facebook and Instagram Celebrate the Class of 2020, a virtual graduation ceremony. The address was given by celebrities like Awkwafina, Jennifer Garner, Oprah Winfrey, Lil Nas X, Simone Biles, and the like. They also shared words of wisdom and Miley Cyrus performed a special performance of her hit song ‘The Climb.’
This ceremony acknowledged high schools and colleges in the United States by name, across each state and city. It also included photos and videos of the class of 2020 as well as messages from principals, chairpersons, deans and other senior educational personnel across the United States of America.
The video was shared on Facebook messenger app Watch and is available on facebook.com/facebookapp. Highlights and more will be posted to Facebook’s Instagram & Facebook accounts as well as Instagram’s own account on the medium. Apart from that, it will be available on social media accounts of contributors too.
Graduates can also host their own virtual graduation ceremonies and parties through Facebook & Instagram. Special features included are a virtual graduation hub, custom filters, celebrations with friends, and family enabled by Messenger rooms and other similar mediums.
Instagram’s own graduation programming
On Monday, May 11, 2020; Instagram initiated daily programming spotlighting senior experiences – from votes of ‘most likely’ to portrait showcases and senior skip day. The app also rolled out new creative tools and features such as a graduation countdown sticker, celebratory sticker pack, new augmented reality effects, and a custom hashtag page for the hashtag #Graduation2020.
Without music, there isn’t any graduation. Facebook and Instagram stories will soon launch a graduation theme for music stickers which is a list of grad-related songs making it easy to find the perfect soundtrack for the graduation moments people share with their stories.
This year’s graduation will be different than other years, and no doubt memorable because of it. Everyone is proud of the graduates for what they have achieved.
Other ideas for graduation ceremonies
The following are some other great ideas that can work for graduation ceremonies really well.
Who can ever forget customized cookies?
There are a lot of good service providers for customized cookie sets. They are helpful in creating cookies featuring their high school sports team mascots, sports team logos, high school logos, college logos, varsity sports team’s logos, and mascots, etc.
Since a lot of high school graduates can go in for fancy dinner parties or Zoom calls with each kind of relative; they love things they can remember for a long time. Memorable moments having fancy items being celebrated with cousins, family, and friends is worth the buck. Other than that, they are good for a virtual party involving singing, gaming, etc.
Virtual dinner on Facetime
For those who are fond of good dinner parties, they can always consider using a special service provider as it can send them dinner party kits, flatware, fancy plates, and other needed stuff right to their doorstep. This will help them get the needed things for a fancy dinner party to be celebrated virtually.
For families and households having a graduate wishing to celebrate their success with; they can be given a fancy kit. Later on, a call on Zoom, Skype, Messenger, or FaceTime can be set to toast such great moments. This helps keep the graduation dinner tradition alive in letter and spirit on virtual terms.
Specially designed balloon-based banners
There is something special about balloons because they pop. The ones that say ‘Special Celebration’ are key to a top-notch virtual graduation party. Sending graduates a fancy balloon banner to have them hang it up in their home or in the background of a video chat helps create that very special feeling of celebrations.
