What Are Foam Boards?
Foam core boards are also called foam core materials. The two terms are interchangeable. A foam board is a hard, lightweight, and inexpensive material that may be cut with a craft knife or a picture frame mat cutter. Frequently, they’re used as a backing for photographs, picture frames and prints.

Foam board Uses
Foam boards are great material for creating displays, lectures, trade shows, presentations, and architectural modelling projects. Businesses utilise foam board signage to advertise their events or offer sales data for their customers. Other uses include:
- Science fair and research projects
- Photo galleries
- Lobby décor
- Aisle markers
- Menu boards
- Notices
- Advertise sales
Three layers create these boards: an interior layer of polystyrene or polyurethane foam, a white clay-coated paper or cotton-archival paper covering on each side, and an outer facing on either side.
Acid-free alpha-cellulose clad boards are one of the best foam boards for picture frames. They last considerably longer and don’t leach chemicals into the artwork.
Advantages
As a non-malleable, robust material, foam boards are excellent for numerous purposes. In contrast to other poster boards, it has a sturdy core and is completely rigid. For storage, foam boards are lightweight and foldable. It does not need any support and holds its form when propped up or suspended.
The material also a lot lighter and thicker than other forms of poster board.
Foam boards are also easier to move, display on the wall, and store because of their lightweight.
Because they are lightweight, foam core boards are simple to print and cut. You may directly print on the foam core and trim the boards quickly to any shape.
Laminate or frame your board for waterproofing. You can also choose from various finishes, including glossy, textured, and matte.
Disadvantages
Foam panels are low-cost, so you may replace them frequently without breaking the bank. On the other hand, foam panels are not best suited for outdoor usage. Excessive UV radiation can damage foam boards, and they can quickly become deformed, discoloured, or destroyed if exposed to sunlight and water.
Understanding thickness and size
The most common size for foam boards is 8′’ x 10′’, but there are also 16′’ x 20′’, 18′’ x 24′’, and 24′’ x 36′. They come in a variety of hues, thicknesses, and sizes. The more dense the board is, the more body and stiffness it will be. The polystyrene foam board, which is thick, sturdy, and can be moulded to any shape or size, is a good choice.
How to Tell the Difference Between “Mounting on Foam Board” and “Printing on Foam Core”?
When a preprinted design is placed on foam board, it’s referred to as foam core mounting. To apply a decal to a foam core, use high-quality printing equipment to print directly onto a it. You may also use it in place of other similar boards.
