Fashion trends come and go – seriously, I check my phone after an hour and there are three new statement pieces trending – but there are some things that have passed the test of time and gracefully fallen into the evergreen category. And top among these trends are wigs.

Their versatility, their endurance, and their ability to fit into just about any environment are what’s made them the fashion front runners that they are today, and of course, as any fashion-forward individual, you’ve got to indulge yourself in the world of wigs. But while getting your hands on these statement pieces will be easy enough – you can thank the internet for that – how exactly are you supposed to style them, so they look their best?

If you’re someone who’s not a seasoned wig wearer then these concerns and questions are all too natural, and you’re so in the right place! Over the years, I’ve accumulated a ton of tips and tricks on how to style your wig, and I’m going to share them all with you!

  1. Get the Goods

First things first, just like before starting off any project, it’s important to gather all of your required items before starting on your wig styling. Things you will need include a wide-toothed comb, a paddle brush, shampoo (the sulfate-free kind, of course), conditioner, tweezers, scissors, a hair curler, and foundation or lace tint. And of course, your wig! If you need top-grade wigs, hg wigs will be highly recommended to you.

Whichever items you end up using, there are a couple of things to keep in mind: quality and gentleness. All of the items that you use should be quality items, there’s no feeling worse than damaging your wig because the products you were using were subpar. And of course, you’re going to have to treat your wig gently and use the products on it with care.

  1. Wash and Dry

Step one of styling any wig properly is to wash it – of course, if it’s a new wig or one that’s clean then you can skip this step – so it looks its best to sit atop your head. To keep your wig in its best shape, you should always use sulfate-free shampoo and be gentle with the wash.

Follow up with thorough conditioning and then take a wide-toothed comb or paddle brush for any tangles, but since wet wigs are especially fragile, you need to operate with care. And since we’re setting our wig up for styling, the next step in the process is drying.

Take a hairdryer and adjust it to the low or medium setting, using it to dry your wig while setting it atop a wig stand. Make sure to not make frantic hand movements, shuffling your fingers through the wig, and treat each strand with care. Once it’s dry, you can start styling.

  1. It’s time for the Part

Now that your wig is washed and dry, it’s show time. And the first thing you need to do is to part your wig. The way that you part your wig will depend on the wig you have, that is, a full lace wig, or a lace front wig.

Full lace wigs give the wearer greater freedom in their styling, whereas lace front wigs can only be styled where the lace is attached. In either case, you need to think about your natural hairline and part when parting the wig. Often, you’ll need to use foundation or lace tint to fill up spots and give it that all-natural look as well as cut away any stray hair.

Of course, if you’re not up for doing all the work of parting and adjusting your wig, then an alternative is to opt for a pre-parted wig, but the crucial thing here is to make sure pre-purchase that it sits well with your natural hair and part.

  1. Curl Station

It’s now time to move on to the next part of the wig styling process: curling! While human hair wigs can be styled with heat tools, they will face damage with excessive heat and are actually more sensitive when it comes to styling tools as compared to regular hair.

A good idea is to use an alcohol and sulfate-free heat protectant, applying a layer onto the wig before curling. Once that’s done, keep your curling tool between a temperature of 200 and 300 degrees Fahrenheit for maximum protection, curling away from your wig easily.

And of course, you’re going to need something to hold these curls in place. go ahead and use some good quality, wig-friendly hairspray, but avoid excessive use as this will cause build-up and prompt more frequent washing of the wig, leading to damage.

  1. Style It!

You’re finally done with the tedious part! Now it’s time to kick back and enjoy the styling process! Put your wig into the hairstyle of your choice – you can choose from buns, braids, half-up hairstyles, the list is endless, really – and go about molding the wig into the desired style, much like you would do your natural hair.

Remember to be gentle and not tie up your wig too tight or fiddle around with your fingers too much, and when using bobby pins or hairbands, don’t go overboard.

So, there’s your super simple and concise wig styling guide. Now go out there and rock your favourite wig and get ready to turn some heads girl! And remember, with wigs, gentle is always the route to go down, whether you’re styling, wearing, or storing!
