A Brief History of Pearls
Pearls are considered the world’s oldest gemstone. It was first discovered in the sarcophagus of a Persian princess.
There are various interesting stories about the pearls. It’s said that once a couple in a restaurant were eating oysters and one of the bit on something like a rock, which was actually a pearl.
Such stories always make the news but the odds of finding a pearl are extremely rare. It is believed that the probability of actually finding a natural pearl in an oyster is just 1 in 10,000. Also, the odds of mollusks producing a pearl of gemstone quality are around 1 in 1 million.
Remember that it is just an old story, and the odds of finding pearls in a restaurant serving seafood are the rarest of rare. But don’t lose hope and do not forget to check the oyster before eating.
How are pearls created?
Fine pearls are the most niche gemstones that even professional jewelers often run into trouble identifying their types, grading scales, and pearl value.
There are two major types of pearls, namely cultured and natural ones. While both of them are 100% real gems, the major difference is based on how they are formed.
How do you obtain natural pearls?
Natural pearls come from an oyster. When an irritant gets inside the oyster mussel’s soft tissue, a defense mechanism is initiated, which causes the oyster to produce a coating, which is further known as nacre. It then oozes layer upon layer until a natural pearl is formed.
How are cultured pearls formed?
Cultured pearls are also created in a mollusk, following the same process but with two major differences. First, these pearls are grown on farms and secondly, irritants are purposely inserted inside the oyster to initiate the process. Cultured pearls are formed after a lot of care and nurturing.
