Top Technologies Used at Online Casinos: From RNGs to Blockchain
Online casinos have been on a crazy run since the first online gambling site started to accept punters back in 1994. Today, with over 3,000 casinos offering all types of games to over four billion occasional and one billion regular players, you can take advantage of the most advanced technologies the gambling world can offer. Live dealer games, cryptocurrency casinos, provably fair casinos, VR games – there are so many new things to try that one might wonder if it’s possible at all to comprehend all the new staff.
Well, we’ll try to help you with this. In the lines below, we’re going to review the technologies that move the online casino industry forward today. Before we start, though, let’s give some credit to Anna Rosak, a gambling guru from KasynoHEX, who shared with us some valuable insights on the latest casino tech and also helped us put this piece together.
Random Number Generator (RNG)
Whether we’re talking about a kasyno online Holandia, a cryptocurrency casino, or a live casino, it has the same mechanism at the core: Random Number Generator (RNG), a pseudorandom algorithm that determines the outcomes of all your games. Note: pseudorandom, not random, which means it selects numbers from a predetermined scope of numbers.
As you might have already guessed, that’s the RNG that determines the volatility, the RTP, and the House Edge of any against-the-machine game you play. And now that we’ve brought these three notions up, let’s elaborate on each of them:
- Volatility shows how risky the bet is, how often players can expect to win, and how big the prize could be.
- Return to Player (RTP) shows how much of the money wagered on the game is expected to return to the player considering he gambles an infinite number of games. For example, a game with an RPT of 95% is expected to pay you back 95 dollars out of every hundred dollars wagered on it if you play an infinite number of games.
- House Edge shows the advantage of the casino over players in a certain game. For example, a roulette house edge of 5.25% would be equal to the RTP of 94.75%.
It goes without saying that the RNG must work properly – otherwise, it would instantly go out of control. Imagine an RNG that generates one Jackpot after the other or the one that generates no prize combinations at all. This is why all casinos get their algorithms verified by independent software testing agencies, such as TST, eCOGRA, VeriSign, and Gaming Associates.
Live Dealer and VR Games
While the notorious pandemic forces millions of brick-and-mortar casino regulars to switch for online casinos, the latter try to erase the border between offline and online with realistic live dealer games streamed from land-based casinos and studios. Although live casino games aren’t new – the first attempts were made about two decades ago – it’s not until recently that they’ve become realistic and pleasant to the eye.
Customizable screens, live chats, and high-definition cameras make live dealer games pretty similar to real action, but there’s even better tech available now: Virtual Reality casinos. These super-modern online casinos simulate the natural experience of traditional casinos, taking full advantage of VR. With a VR headset on, you can walk through the premises of a virtual casino and then enter the gambling hall where you can compete with fellow VR players. Amazing, huh?
Crypto and Provably Fair Casinos
Now that Bitcoin has reached a new all-time high and the new wave of buyers flooded the market, even more, casinos will start accepting crypto – which is only logical since cryptocurrencies cut fees and eliminate the third party, let alone enable online gambling to players from anti-gambling countries and territories.
Besides crypto, a new class of online casinos emerged: Provably Fair casinos. Via recording your gambling history in a blockchain, these casinos make it possible for you to verify all the played games at the end or even during your gambling session.
- Here’s how it works: at first, two unique seeds – the User Seed (generated by the player) and the Server Seed (generated by the casino) – are generated. Next, these seeds are combined into a unique Seed Pair determining the outcomes of all the player’s games. Finally, at the end of the session – or when the player wants to introduce a new User Seed – the casino decrypts the previously used Server Seed so that the player could verify his outcomes.
Provably Fair casinos aren’t perfect yet, but they are definitely the next logical step in the development of online gambling.
That said, no matter the tech, gambling can still be addictive, so make sure to keep your mental state in check. And if you feel like being hooked by casino games, immediately ask for help at international – BeGambleAware, Gamblers Anonymous, GamCare, etc. – or local problem gambling organizations.
